A

Analytical Framework
An analytical framework is a named, structured set of questions or lenses applied to a case, situation, or object of analysis. The framework is specific (each question has a concrete focus), teachable (participants can understand what meaningful analysis against each question looks like before they apply it), and ordered (the questions build toward the extraction of transferable principles). Analytical frameworks are the load-bearing element of Case Analysis and appear across several activities whenever the goal is structured analysis rather than open-ended discussion. The specific framework varies with the activity and the target skill, but the structural role — giving analytical work a spine — is constant.

Attention
Attention is the brain's triage mechanism for sensory and cognitive input, deciding in real time which signals get routed to conscious processing and which get filtered out before reaching working memory. It is a finite resource allocated based on perceived relevance: material the brain tags as personally meaningful gets through, material that doesn't is dropped before encoding can begin. Attention is the first gate in the learning pipeline and the constraint that governs how much of a session ever enters the participant's memory in the first place.

Authentic Project
An authentic project in Project-Based Learning is an artifact the participants actually need or will genuinely use after the workshop, rather than a simulated exercise they will abandon at the end. Authenticity is the load-bearing distinction that separates Project-Based Learning from conventional "applied exercise" formats — simulated projects produce simulated learning, while authentic projects produce durable capability. Bloom's Taxonomy
Bloom's taxonomy is a six-level hierarchy of cognitive skills — remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, create — originally published by Benjamin Bloom in 1956 and revised by Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl in 2001. Levels 1–2 describe knowledge and understanding work; Levels 3–6 describe skill-development work. Workshop outcomes should be written using L3–L6 verbs, with L1–L2 work moved into pre-work.

Chunking
Chunking is the process of grouping individual items of information into larger, meaningful units so that working memory can hold more of the underlying material. An expert can hold the same amount of information in working memory as a novice, but chunked into larger conceptual units — which is part of why experts don't experience overload at volumes that overwhelm beginners.

Closing Commitment
A closing commitment is a specific, concrete action or decision the participant articulates at the end of a learning experience, naming what they will do with what they just learned. Closing commitments are distinct from general reflections ("I learned a lot") in that they name a specific action tied to a specific timeframe. The research on learning transfer, from Robert Dipboye's organizational training work through contemporary formative-assessment research, supports closing-commitment capture as a reliable structural mechanism for translating learning into changed behavior. Cognitive Load Theory
Cognitive load theory is a framework developed by John Sweller beginning in 1988 that explains learning outcomes as a function of three types of mental effort: intrinsic load (the inherent difficulty of the material), extraneous load (effort created by the design of the instruction), and germane load (effort devoted to building a mental model of the concept). Instructional design improvements come primarily from reducing extraneous load so more capacity is available for germane load.

Constructive controversy is David and Roger Johnson's cooperative-learning adaptation of structured debate, consolidated with Karl Smith in their 2000 *Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning* article. The approach uses the protocol and discipline of formal debate but frames it as a cooperative rather than competitive activity — the goal is not to win but to produce sharper understanding of a contested question by hearing both sides defended seriously and synthesizing the outcome. Constructive controversy is the academic name for what Structured Debate operationalizes in workshop contexts, and the term is the standard reference in the research literature on debate as a learning activity.

Deliberate Practice
Deliberate practice is Anders Ericsson's research-based concept describing the specific kind of practice that builds expert-level skill. It is purposeful (targeting a specific capability), structured (designed to progressively stretch the learner beyond their current performance), feedback-rich (the learner receives information on what worked and what did not after each attempt), and sustained (carried out over long time horizons). Deliberate practice is distinct from ordinary repetition or general practice, which can produce no skill gain even across decades. Design Constraint
A design constraint is a specific, concrete requirement a design must meet to be considered a viable solution to the design problem. Constraints are distinct from preferences — a constraint is binding (violating it means the design is not a solution), while a preference is adjustable. Constraints are typically derived from the real conditions under which the design will operate: time limits, context requirements, non-negotiable features, prohibited approaches, accessibility requirements, budget ceilings. In Design Challenge and in design work generally, constraint specificity is load-bearing: vague constraints produce designs that satisfy nothing in particular; specific constraints force the trade-offs design work actually requires.

Desirable Difficulty
Desirable difficulty is a learning-science principle formalized by Robert Bjork describing the counterintuitive finding that certain kinds of effort during learning — spacing retrieval, interleaving topics, retrieving from memory instead of re-reading — feel harder in the moment but produce stronger long-term memory than easier, fluent study. Differentiated observer protocols are the practice of assigning distinct, non-overlapping observation tasks to multiple observers watching the same performance or interaction. Dot voting is a group-decision technique in which each participant is given a fixed number of dot stickers (typically three to five) and votes on posted options by placing dots on their preferred items. The aggregate distribution produces a visible cohort-level prioritization. Dot voting is often used inside Gallery Walk to produce a numeric read on what the cohort collectively prioritized across posted work, and it also appears as a standalone decision-making activity in facilitation contexts.

Encoding is the process by which information moves from working memory into long-term memory, where it can later be retrieved. Encoding quality depends on what the learner *does* with the material — passive exposure produces weak encoding; active processing (discussion, application, teaching-back) produces strong encoding. The quality of encoding determines whether a memory survives beyond the session.

Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is the practice of collecting data about participant learning during a session (rather than after it) in ways that allow the workshop leader to adjust content, pace, or explanation in real time. Formative assessment is distinct from summative assessment, which evaluates learners after the fact; its purpose is continuous improvement of the teaching, not evaluation of the learners. Graduated Signal
A graduated signal is a polling mechanism that captures response along a continuous or ordinal scale rather than a binary yes/no. Graduated signals produce richer distribution data than binary polling — they surface cluster points, outliers, and spread. Fist-of-Five is the most widely-used graduated signal in workshop-craft contexts (five-point scale). Likert-scale polls, thumbs-up-middle-thumbs-down, and stoplight colors (red-yellow-green) are variants of the graduated-signal pattern. The pattern's value depends on explicit anchors for each position so participants' responses are comparable; graduated signals without anchors produce noise rather than signal.

Hypothesis formation in Inquiry-Based Learning is the move where participants propose possible answers to the inquiry question before investigating, then identify what evidence would support or undermine each hypothesis. Ill-Structured Problem
An ill-structured problem is a problem that has multiple possible approaches, no single obvious answer, and enough complexity that it cannot be solved by applying a formula. The term is central to Problem-Based Learning: well-structured problems produce exercise (executing a known procedure against a known answer), while ill-structured problems produce genuine reasoning. The distinction matters for workshop design because most problems that feel "realistic" turn out to be well-structured in disguise — a problem whose solution path is obvious once the participant sees the relevant framework is structurally an exercise, not a problem.

Jigsaw II
Jigsaw II is Robert Slavin's 1986 adaptation of the Jigsaw activity. After the standard home-group task, participants take an individual quiz covering every piece of the material — not just their own. Team scores roll up from individual scores, which makes every expert accountable for their home group's understanding rather than only their own mastery. Jigsaw II is used when the content is testable and the workshop leader wants hard accountability on the teaching stage.

Leader-Directed Accountability
Leader-directed accountability is the practice of the workshop leader actively distributing engagement expectations across the cohort by naming specific participants for response rather than relying on voluntary participation. The mechanism creates a structural expectation that any participant may be called on at any time, which produces consistent pre-work completion and distributed engagement — effects well-documented in Doug Lemov's *Teach Like a Champion* and in Elise Dallimore's cold-calling research. Workshop Doctor's Modern Teaching framework names this as Technique 4 in its engagement-distribution toolkit. Meaningful Learning
Meaningful learning is David Ausubel's 1968 concept, from *Educational Psychology: A Cognitive View*, describing the cognitive process by which a learner incorporates new concepts into their existing knowledge structure by recognizing how the new concepts relate to concepts they already hold. It contrasts with rote learning, in which the learner memorizes information without integrating it into prior knowledge. Concept mapping is the instructional technique most directly designed to operationalize meaningful learning — the act of naming relationships between concepts forces the integration the theory describes.

Milestone-Review Rubric
A milestone-review rubric is a defined set of evaluation criteria specific to one milestone in a multi-session project program. Each milestone has its own rubric reflecting what the artifact should look like at that specific stage — criteria are milestone-specific, distinct from earlier and later milestones. An observable outcome is a desired learning result expressed as a behavior, artifact, decision, or performance that a third party could witness and evaluate from the outside. Observable outcomes use Bloom's L3–L6 verbs: apply, analyze, evaluate, create. Outcomes expressed in terms of internal states — *understand*, *know*, *appreciate* — are not observable and do not qualify.

Observer Protocol
An observer protocol is a specific, concrete observation task assigned to a participant in a structured-observation activity. Rather than watching the activity generally, the observer tracks one named pattern — reasoning moves, language choices, defended versus abandoned positions, emotional shifts, unexamined assumptions, participation dynamics — and reports on that pattern in the debrief. Observer protocols are what turn passive watching into active learning work. Peer-Review Rubric
A peer-review rubric is a defined set of criteria that participants apply to each other's work during a Peer Review activity. A good peer-review rubric is specific enough that two reviewers applying it to the same work would arrive at similar evaluations, and teaches the reader something about the domain even before they apply it. Psychological Safety
Psychological safety is the interpersonal-climate condition in which participants feel able to take risks, admit uncertainty, perform imperfectly, and ask questions without fearing negative social consequences. The term was formalized by Amy Edmondson in *Administrative Science Quarterly* and extended in her book *The Fearless Organization*. In Role-Play specifically, a psychological-safety container is a precondition for real engagement — participants who do not trust the container perform defensively, opt out, or engage only at a superficial level that defeats the activity's purpose. Purposeful initiative is the active-learning design principle that the session structurally fosters participants' self-initiation through "just enough" pre-work that is necessary for the opening activity, through natural consequences for unpreparedness, and through design that makes preparation visibly productive. Q

Questioning Insight
Questioning insight is Reg Revans's term, from his *L = P + Q* formula articulated in *ABC of Action Learning*, for the learning that emerges specifically from being asked probing questions about one's own situation by peers. Distinct from programmed knowledge (what the participant already knows or has been taught), questioning insight is the thinking that surfaces only when someone else asks the question. Action Learning's central claim is that in contexts of genuinely new problems — what Revans called "situations of puzzle" rather than "situations of difficulty" — questioning insight is what moves learning forward, not additional programmed knowledge. The Action Learning Set is the structural unit designed to produce questioning insight through disciplined peer questioning.

Reflective Practice
Reflective practice is Donald Schön's term for the cognitive mode in which professionals deliberately step back from action to examine their own thinking, assumptions, and patterns. Schön distinguished *reflection-in-action* (thinking during the action) from *reflection-on-action* (thinking afterward); both are distinct from the non-reflective default of acting on habit or intuition alone. Reflective practice is the foundation for all retrieval-reflection activities — Minute Paper, Muddiest Point, Two-Stars-and-a-Wish, Structured Silence, and Exit Ticket all operationalize reflective practice in specific formats. A review framework is a named, structured set of dimensions applied to a recorded performance, artifact, or observation object. Each dimension is specific (a concrete, observable aspect) and together they cover the pattern space the review is designed to surface. In Video-Recorded Practice, the review framework converts a passive viewing into an analytical review — participants track specific patterns against named dimensions rather than reacting to the overall performance. Review frameworks also appear across other activities whenever the object being examined needs to produce structured insight rather than general reaction: Case Analysis's analytical framework, Peer Review's rubric, and Observer-Debrief Role-Play's differentiated protocols are all review-framework variants.

Rough Prototype
A rough prototype is a deliberately unpolished early-stage version of an artifact, presented for shape-level feedback rather than for polish-level evaluation. Roughness is structural, not apologetic — the prototype is rough because polish is not the point at this stage. A one-page outline, a three-slide sketch, a handwritten diagram, a two-minute rough Loom walkthrough are typical forms. Rough prototypes invite shape-level feedback — does this solve the problem, what does it assume, what is missing — that polished prototypes do not. Scaffolding
Scaffolding is the instructional principle of providing structured support that enables a learner to reach an outcome they couldn't reach unaided, then progressively removing that support as the learner's capability grows. Originating in Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and formalized by Wood, Bruner, and Ross, scaffolding describes both the in-session moves a builder makes — worked examples, guided practice, prompts — and the longer arc of a multi-session program, where each retrieval and each new application rests on the one before it. Spaced retrieval is scaffolding applied to memory itself: each rung builds on the last.

Scenario Arc Coherence
Scenario arc coherence is the structural quality that distinguishes an integrated multi-move scenario from a concatenation of disconnected moments. A coherent arc has phases that shape each other causally — the opening determines what is possible in the middle, the middle produces the conditions the close responds to, the complication is structurally embedded rather than surprise-dropped. Arc coherence is the load-bearing element of Scenario Enactment; incoherent arcs produce enactments that practice sequential moments rather than integrated situations. A self-observation debrief is a structured reflection protocol used in paired learning activities where no external observer is present. Participants answer a specific set of questions about what they noticed in themselves during the enactment, what they noticed about the counterpart, and what they would try differently. The protocol replaces the third-party observation an external observer would provide, and its specificity is what makes paired activities produce generalizable insight rather than ending at "that was interesting."

A temperature check is a brief real-time polling move by which a workshop leader gathers cohort-state signal — who is ready, who is confused, who agrees, who has prior experience — without pausing for full reflection or writing. Temperature checks take thirty seconds to two minutes, use lightweight mechanisms (physical body signals, finger counts, spatial positioning, emoji reactions), and serve the leader's status-awareness function. The polling-and-temperature family is built around temperature-check mechanisms of varying forms: Stand-Up / Sit-Down (binary), Fist-of-Five (five-point scale), Four-Corners (four-position spatial). The principle maps to the Status Awareness guiding principle, which names real-time cohort-state reading as one of the seven Active Learning principles.

Think-Pair-Square
Think-Pair-Square is a variation of Think-Pair-Share in which the share-out happens inside a four-person "square" (two pairs combined) rather than to the full cohort. Participants think silently on their own, pair with one other participant, and then combine with a second pair to share. The square form reduces the social exposure of full-group share-outs, gives every participant two additional perspectives, and is the default variation when the prompt is personal or high-stakes.
