Observer Protocol

An observer protocol is a specific, concrete observation task assigned to a participant in a structured-observation activity. Rather than watching the activity generally, the observer tracks one named pattern — reasoning moves, language choices, defended versus abandoned positions, emotional shifts, unexamined assumptions, participation dynamics — and reports on that pattern in the debrief. Observer protocols are what turn passive watching into active learning work. Fishbowl is the activity most fully built around them, but observer protocols also appear in Simulation-Based Learning, peer review, and any activity where observation produces learning for the observer.
