The Self-Reference Effect

The self-reference effect is the research finding that information encoded in reference to the self — connected to the learner's own identity, experience, or circumstances — is remembered more accurately and more durably than the same information encoded in other ways. First demonstrated by Rogers, Kuiper, and Kirker in 1977 and confirmed across 129 studies in Symons and Johnson's 1997 meta-analysis, the effect is one of the most robust findings in memory research. It is the mechanism underneath why "this matters to me" material outperforms "this is about a topic" material.
