The ICAP Framework

The ICAP framework, developed by Michelene Chi, is a four-level hierarchy of cognitive engagement in learning: Passive (receiving only), Active (doing something observable), Constructive (producing new output), and Interactive (producing with others where each contribution shapes the next). Learning depth increases up the hierarchy. Most traditional workshops operate at Passive with occasional Active moments; active-learning methods systematically design for Constructive and Interactive engagement.
