This series has covered seven active-learning methods — seven different ways to structure a workshop so participants do the cognitive work that produces real learning. Each method was developed to solve a specific kind of learning problem. Each produces a different kind of capability. The methods are not interchangeable, and picking the one that fits the workshop you are designing is a design decision, not a preference.

- Inquiry-Based Learning develops investigative capacity.
- Case-Based Learning sharpens pattern recognition.
- Collaborative Learning teaches collaboration itself.
- Action Learning produces behavior change in the participant's ongoing work.
- Simulation-Based Learning builds practiced performance for specific interactions.
This page qualifies the choice. Four questions, worked in order. By the end, you will have narrowed the seven methods to the primary fit for the workshop you are designing — and, often, a secondary method that can enrich the primary without competing with it.
Question 1 — How long is your workshop or program?
Time is the first constraint, and it cuts the seven methods into two groups.
Single session — 60 to 180 minutes. Five methods fit a single-session workshop: Problem-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, Case-Based Learning, Collaborative Learning, and Simulation-Based Learning. Each one is built to produce meaningful learning inside the time of one meeting.
Multi-session program — weeks or months. Two methods require the longer timeline: Project-Based Learning and Action Learning. Both depend on the participant working between sessions — producing the next piece of the artifact, or taking the next action on a live problem — so they cannot compress into one sitting. If you try to run either method in a single session, the method collapses into its components and produces less than half of what it is designed to produce.
If you are designing a single-session workshop, continue to Question 2. If you are designing a multi-session program, skip to Question 4.
Question 2 — What capability should participants walk out with?
For a single-session workshop, the second question is about outcome. What does the participant need to be able to do at the end of the session that they could not do at the start?
- Sharpened judgment for situations without clear right answers — the ability to diagnose, choose between plausible approaches, and act under uncertainty. The method is Problem-Based Learning. The session is organized around an ill-structured problem participants work toward solving.
- Investigative capacity — the ability to examine evidence, form and test hypotheses, and build understanding through inquiry rather than through instruction. The method is Inquiry-Based Learning. The session is organized around an open question participants investigate.
- Pattern recognition across similar situations — the ability to see what kind of situation you are in by drawing on cases you have worked through before. The method is Case-Based Learning. The session is organized around a specific, resolved case participants analyze in depth.
- Collaboration skill or cohort alignment — the ability to work productively with others, and the shared understanding that comes from collective work across a cohort. The method is Collaborative Learning. The session is organized around the group dynamic itself.
- Rehearsed performance of a specific interaction — the ability to carry out a conversation, pitch, or facilitation move the participant will face for real afterward. The method is Simulation-Based Learning. The session is organized around a simulated scenario participants enact.
If more than one answer feels right, the tie-breaker is the next question.
Question 3 — What material or dynamic drives the session?
Each method is built around a different structural center. The one that matches the material you have is usually the method that fits.
- An unresolved problem with multiple plausible approaches — the problem is the center; participants work forward to solve it. → Problem-Based Learning.
- An open question without a defined answer — the question is the center; participants investigate through hypothesis formation and evidence. → Inquiry-Based Learning.
- A specific, detailed, resolved scenario — the case is the center; participants analyze it retrospectively to draw out transferable principles. → Case-Based Learning.
- The group dynamic itself — the collaboration is the center; the method requires a group and runs in paired, small-group, or large-group configurations. → Collaborative Learning.
- A simulated scenario to enact — the scenario is the center; participants play roles and practice the interaction live. → Simulation-Based Learning.
A tell: if you are unsure whether your session has "a problem" or "a question" at its center, you probably have a question. Problems have a solution space; questions have an answer space. Another tell: if the participant needs to do something specific afterward that you could recognize on sight — shake a hand, open a call, deliver a piece of feedback — the center is a scenario to enact, not a problem to solve.
Question 4 — What is happening between sessions?
For a multi-session program, the question that separates the two methods is what participants are doing between meetings. Both methods require between-session work, but the work looks different, and the difference is what distinguishes the methods structurally.
- Between sessions, participants are building the next piece of a tangible artifact. They draft the next component, refine the next section, prototype the next element. The artifact grows across the program, session by session, until the participant leaves with something complete they will actually use. → Project-Based Learning.
- Between sessions, participants are taking real action in their own live work. They make a decision, ship a change, run an experiment in their actual context. They return to the next session with what they did and what it produced. → Action Learning.
Project-Based Learning organizes a program around building. Action Learning organizes a program around doing. The between-session work is the engine of each method — it is where most of the learning actually happens, and the in-session work feeds into it or reflects on it.
A test for the distinction: if you cannot name clearly what your participants will be building or doing between sessions, the program is probably a sequence of workshops rather than a multi-session program. Reconsider Question 1.
A Fifth Question, When It Matters — Group or Individual?
Five of the seven methods — Problem-Based, Inquiry-Based, Case-Based, Simulation-Based, and Action Learning — run in both group and individual configurations. The choice between them depends on whether the learning benefits from cross-pollination across participants or from sustained focus on one participant's own context.
- Group form is stronger when multiple perspectives sharpen the work, when peer conversation is itself a target skill, or when the session is building cohort-wide alignment.
- Individual form is stronger when each participant is working on their own specific context, when the cohort is small or the session is 1:1, or when the participant's own situation is the load-bearing material.
Project-Based Learning also runs in both configurations, though individual configuration is often stronger for creator-economy programs where each participant is building their own artifact for their own business.
Collaborative Learning is the exception. It requires a group — the method does not run in individual configuration. But within group collaboration, it runs across paired, small-group, and large-group configurations, and the pyramid pattern (pairs → small groups → full cohort) is often the strongest single-session design.
When the Answer Is More Than One Method
Most real workshops combine methods. This is not a failure of the selection process — it is often the strongest design.
- A six-month Action Learning program might use Case-Based Learning in its opening sessions to build pattern recognition before participants take action on their own problems.
- A single-session Problem-Based Learning workshop might use paired Collaborative Learning structure for the small groups working the problem.
- A multi-session Project-Based Learning program might use Inquiry-Based Learning sessions to sharpen the investigative work that shapes the artifact.
- A single-session Case-Based Learning workshop might close with a short Simulation-Based round in which participants enact the kind of conversation the case was really about.
- A Simulation-Based Learning workshop on sales conversations might open with brief Case-Based analysis of a resolved sale before enacting a new scenario.
The methods are compatible because they operate on different dimensions. Problem-Based and Case-Based operate on the material — what the session works on. Collaborative operates on the dynamic — how participants work together. Action operates on the timeline — when the work happens. Simulation-Based operates on the mode — whether participants analyze the material or enact it.
The choice this page asks you to make is about the primary method — the one the session or program is structurally organized around. Secondary methods can enrich the work without competing with the primary. What distinguishes a well-designed workshop from a busy one is that the primary method is clear, and every design decision downstream supports it.
The Honest Default
If you are still not sure, here is the honest default for the creator economy: the method is Problem-Based Learning for most workshops, and Project-Based Learning when the scope extends across multiple sessions with a specific artifact the participant needs to finish.
The logic behind Problem-Based as the default: the PLAN phase of the Roadmap has already identified the specific problem your ICP is bringing to the workshop — the reason they are there, the thing they cannot currently do, the gap they need closed. Problem-Based Learning is the method that centers a session on solving that problem. The match is natural. If your PLAN work has done its job, you already know the problem; Problem-Based Learning turns the session into working that problem through to a solution with your participants rather than explaining it at them.
The logic behind Project-Based as the default for longer programs: when the scope extends beyond a single session — a multi-week cohort, a flagship program, a signature offer — the participant usually needs to leave with something built, not just with sharper judgment. The goal is not for participants to understand workshop design in the abstract; it is for them to finish their own workshop build end-to-end across the program. The artifact — a redesigned workshop they will actually deliver — is both the vehicle and the evidence of the learning. Every session in the program serves that build.
These are defaults, not prescriptions. The four questions above override them when your workshop's specific outcome, material, timeline, or cohort makes another method a stronger fit. But if you have done the PLAN phase cleanly and have not yet picked a method, starting from Problem-Based (for single sessions) or Project-Based (for programs) is the move most likely to fit.
