The Generation Effect
The generation effect is the research-backed finding that learners remember information they produce — write, explain, solve, apply — significantly better than information they only receive. Producing forces retrieval, integration with existing knowledge, and committed output, all of which strengthen the memory trace. It is one of the core mechanisms through which active learning outperforms passive instruction.
