Jason Wright is the founder of Workshop Doctor and a specialist in the psychology and science of learning. He holds a PhD in psychology and spent years inside higher education before turning his focus to the workshop work he runs today.
His path here started with a gap he kept seeing in his own classroom. Students scored well on assessments and then struggled to apply that same material in the world outside the course.
The same gap shows up in workshops. Full rooms, strong satisfaction scores, and a real distance between what participants can describe at the end and what they put into practice afterward. Standard explanations — better content, better presenters, more committed participants — didn’t account for it.
So Jason started experimenting. He flipped the format, cut his own talk time, and pushed more of the work onto the participants. He could see it working, and he had to figure out why.
That sent him deep into the research. Decades of cognitive psychology and the science of learning had already mapped how attention, working memory, encoding, and retrieval behave in a live room. The structural patterns that dominate workshop design — extended presentation, dense slides, treating content-coverage as the same thing as learning — don’t line up with much of what the research describes.
The last several years have been a synthesis: applying that research to actual workshop design, refining the moves that work, and setting aside the patterns that don’t. Workshop Doctor is the result. It gives workshop creators the structural tools Jason had to assemble the hard way, so the distance between what their sessions are producing and what those sessions could produce gets shorter.
Workshop Doctor
The core Workshop Doctor platform — including the flagship Workshop Health Check diagnostic — lives at workshopdoctor.com. The Workshop Health Check is a free 13-minute diagnostic across the five phases of workshop design. It surfaces what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus first.
